In this action thriller, Denzel Washington stars as Whip Whitaker, an exceptionally talented pilot with an exceptionally talented alcohol addiction. The film follows Whip as he tries to cope with instant fame after a controversial plane crash. Denzel doesn’t disappoint, as always. His attention to character mannerisms in this movie is scary good. But what was really scary was the film’s writing. As in any movie involving a plane crash, religion will be highlighted. However, in this movie, it was force-fed to you. So much so that it turned a normally serious subject into a joke. Now I can’t completely blame the script, seasoned but first-time action thriller director, Robert Zemeckis, must take ownership as well. There is a way to to reel bad dialogue in through directing, and Zemeckis didn’t do it. Ultimately, what saved him and the movie was the reputable supporting cast lead by John Goodman. Goodman may get an Oscar nod for his magnetic role as Harling Mays, Whip’s loyal, hippie best friend. 661
