Fresh off of “racy” hit, Inglorious Bastards, Quentin Tarantino tackles slavery with Django Unchained. Set in the antebellum South, the story follows newly freed slave, Django (Jamie Foxx) and his magical German (Christoph Waltz), as they try to rescue Django’s enslaved wife (Kerry Washington) from her new owner (Leonardo DiCaprio). The film has the same amount of action as you would expect from Tarantino but with way more blood. I know that we are discussing Tarantino here, but it’s seriously a lot of blood. An almost comical amount. Now the no holds barred levity related to slavery will probably rub some people the wrong way. The very thin silver lining is that Tarantino pokes a fair amount of fun at the racist South. One disappoint that I did have was with Django’s stoic demeanor. I wanted more gregariousness and comedy from Django. A little more Jamie Foxx and a little less Clint Eastwood would have better served the film’s over-the-top tone. At almost three hours, the movie is a tad bit long for the simple, villain/hero plot. However, the solid acting of the star-studded cast, highlighted by Samuel Jackson’s hilarious house negro role, will keep your attention until the end. 570
